Because this was the first offical mentor meeting I have had with Ms. Jo Lynn, we mainly just talked about what I need her to be as my mentor. I explained to her that I picked her for her experience, and her advice would be helpful as I get ready for and start my product. She recommended I start volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club in Silsbee. She said there are several opportunities for me to gain experience there or even do my product there.

This meeting was our first time meeting in person. After introducing ourselves and talking about our Christmas breaks, we discussed my ideas for an after school program. I let her know that my main goal I hope to accomplish through this project is to help alleviate poverty in children through focussing on Jesus' salvation and focussing on education. We mainly talked about the questions I had, including funds, legal issues, transportation, advertisement, and volunteers.
Funds: Go to churches in the area, but have a good plan nailed down first. People might be more willing to donate snacks and supplies rather than money. Make sure there is another person that is also accountable for the money.
Legal: Background checks are going to need to be done on all volunteers. There needs to be a least two adults in a room with a child. Any building chosen will have its own legal rules.
Transportation: Use the school's busses to drop the kids off and make sure to push parent pick up.
Advertisement: Send out some sort of school flyer but figure out how to target a specific group. Make the sign ups first come first served.
Volunteers: Go to churches in the area, but have a good plan nailed down first. Volunteers are going to need to go through training.

I called Jo Lynn so that I could update her on all the structuring I have done on my project. She liked my ideas and said it was well thought out. The only question I had for her was how to sign up volunteers. She suggested I have a sign up form simliar to my registration form for the volunteers as well as have them sign a list of rules. She told me that as long as the volunteers have a Silsbee ISD ID, they do not need a background check.

I contacted Jo Lynn in order to give her an update on the progress I have made and obtain her advice on the set back of needing insurance. I told her that I was not sure whether to try to have the insurance donated or just to move the program to First Baptist Church. She advised me to try to have the insurance donated so that I could have the experience dealing with insurance. Because Jo Lynn and Mrs. Carrell supported the idea of having the insurance donated, I decided to attempt to do it.

I wanted to call Jo Lynn this week before I start the A.B.L.E. after school program in order to get her final feedback. I told her my plan for picking the children up and the Bible study curriculum, and she thought everything was well planned out. She reminded me to have fun and to call her next week and tell her all about how the first week went.

I called Jo Lynn so I could let her know how the program is goingso far. I told her about all the children I have gotten to know, a typical day at A.B.L.E., and the few problems I have encountered. She told me that it sounds like everything is going well. She suggested I implement an award system in order to encourage good behavior.
