Theology Of
Missions
1st Week
This week was spent doing research and reflection. I finally got two books I ordered in the mail: When Helping Hurts and Bible and Missions. I started When Helping Hurts; however, I plan to really get into it next week. I also took the notes I received in during my speech and typed them up into a reflection paper.
2nd Week
I met with the school's GT coordinator this week, and we talked about my progress with my research. She told me I am on the right track and that she can help me whenever I need it. I spent the rest of the week doing research. I started reading When Helping Hurts and finished part one. I also started the volunteer process for Galveston Urban Ministries (GUM). Hopefully I will get to work in their after school program soon.
3rd Week
I had a proctor meeting with Mrs. Carrell on Monday. We talked about my progress and my idea for an after school program. This week, I also set up a time to visit the GUM after school program for Tuesday (10-27). However, the biggest hurricane ever recorded hit Mexico and I had to cancel it due to the rain. I plan to visit GUM during the fifth week of the six weeks. I spent the rest of the week reading When Helping Hurts.
4th Week
I contacted the GUM volunteer coordinator to set up a new time to visit GUM and made plans to visit on Tuesday (11-3). My whole week was dedicated to research. When Helping Hurts has been teaching me how the fall of man has effected poverty. I've also been thinking about who my mentor could be because I plan to pick one after my visit to GUM.
5th Week
I visited GUM on Tuesday of this week. Despite my GPS's low battery life and the 2 foot deep creek I was forced to drive through, I made it safely to Galveston and learned a lot about their after school program. I was able to play with the kids, help them with their homework, and even participate in a crazy dance party, strategically used to calm the kids down. The rest of the week I continued my research. I have thought a lot about my final product, and I believe an after school program would be best.
6th Week
I asked Jo Lynn Hawk to be my mentor this week, and she accepted. I gave her all of the paper work and got everything in order. Now that I have a mentor, my plan is to really begin working hard on my project. In order to do as big of a project as I expect I need to start soon.
